Deputies Identify Man Killed in 6 Vehicle Crash

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich (April 29, 2014) – Deputies have identified a man killed in a six vehicle fiery crash along U.S. 131 this morning.

56-year-old Richard Simmons of Kalamazoo was killed in the crash that happened along southbound U.S.131 just north of Schoolcraft just before 7:00 a.m.

Investigators say several vehicles were stopped at a light near Lyons Street when a PT Cruiser slammed into the back of the line.  One of the vehicles that was hit flew into a power pole, flipped and caught fire.

One other driver involved was hospitalized.  The other drivers did not sustain serious injuries in the crash.

The crash shutdown U.S. 131 in both directions between U Avenue and Eliza Avenue.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.  Michigan State Police, Schoolcraft Police and South County Fire Authority assisted with the response.
