BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (June 3, 2014) — Divers with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department plan to resume their search for a 17-year-old swimmer on June 3, after he went under the water and did not resurface.
Emergency crews responded to a call for two swimmers who were struggling in Lake Chapin, off South Main Street around 6:30 p.m. on June 2. Just before they got to the scene, one swimmer, also 17-years-old, made it out of the water. However, the other 17-year-old boy had gone under the water by that point.
Crews from the Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Fire Department started a search along with a private boat, and the Buchanan Township Fire Department also responded with their rescue boat.
However, crews stopped searching when the scene became too dark and they plan to continue their search in the morning. Police say the teenager who made it to shore was checked at the scene, and is okay.
