GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (July 5, 2014) – Fire Fighters spent hours trying to determine what caused a fire in the Heritage Hill section of Grand Rapids that resulted in seven families without a place to live tonight.

Firefighters were called to an apartment home on the 100 block on Union NE after a report of an explosion.

When crews arrived were told they found the apartment in the back of building on fire.

It’s believed the fire started in that location and then spread to the apartment above.

In total, the GRFD said three units were damaged but because of the smoke and water damage throughout the building no one is allowed to live there at this time.

According to the Grand Rapids Fire Department all people living in the apartment are accounted for and no one was hurt.

The families are now working with the Red Cross to find temporary accommodations.

Fire fighters are not sure what the explosion was or what caused the fire.
