HOLLAND, Mich. (July 11, 2014) — As part of the reconstruction of part of I-196 this summer, one of the ramps will close Monday in the I-196/M-40 interchange.
On July 14 at 6 a.m., the ramp from eastbound I-196 to M-40 will close for construction and is expected to remain closed through August 1. The detour options include exiting early at US-31 to get to M-40, or going past the M-40 interchange to exit at Adams Street, then backtracking to M-40 by taking 16th Street west to US-31, then to M-40.
In addition, as part of the overall project, a new loop ramp will be added to the M-40 interchange from southbound M-40 to eastbound I-196. This will eliminate the need to wait for traffic to turn left from southbound M-40 onto eastbound I-196.
The overall project runs through October.
But most lane reductions will be in place at night at on the weekends.
Michigan Department of Transportation begins repairing concrete and
asphalt pavement and repairing pavement joints on the divided highway
between US-31 and 88th Avenue.
While most lane closures are
expected to be kept away from daylight hours during the week, MDOT says
there may be times where lane closures will be used in the middle of the
The project runs from July 11 through September 12.
(July 9, 2014) — Here’s how the US-131 project in downtown Grand Rapids shapes up for this week.
Southbound US-131, left lane closed from Leonard Street to just south of Bridge Street. This is likely to change in coming weeks.
The far left lane is now exit-only to the ramp to eastbound I-196 until further notice.
The ramp from US-131 to Pearl Street is closed for most of the duration of the project.
The ramps from eastbound and westbound I-196 to southbound US-131 are closed until the end of the project.
The project will continue through August 25, with weekend and nighttime ramp and lane closures to be announced later.
(July 9, 2014) — New this week, only one ramp is closed in the US-131/Stadium Drive interchange in Kalamazoo.
The ramp from northbound US-131 to eastbound Stadium Drive is closed through July 21. All other ramps are open. There are still lane closures on Stadium Drive east of US-131.
The detour requires that you continue north on US-131, exit at W. Main Street, go east to Drake Road, then south to Stadium Drive. Expect lane closures on W. Main Street for work that’s underway there (map below).
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (July 2, 2014) — Every day, more than 110,000 vehicles
travel along US-131 in downtown Grand Rapids, and another 70,000 drivers
go across town on I-196.
A planned bridge maintenance project will affect just about all of those drivers beginning July 7.
“This is a big project. This will be the most disruptive of the summer,” says
MDOT’s John Richard. Six bridges on US-131 and will get repairs in a
about six weeks of intensive work.
There are several aspects of this project that you need to be alerted to:
- The left lane from Leonard Street will become an exit-only lane to
eastbound I-196. Through traffic needs to stay in the right two lanes.
- Two lanes will remain open during the day, but nighttime work will require traffic to be reduced to one lane.
- The northbound lanes will be affected the least. There will be lane closures from Wealthy Street to Market Avenue.
- The ramps from eastbound I-196 and westbound I-196 to southbound US-131 will be closed during the entire project.
- The detour requires you to take US-131 north to Ann Street, exit, and take US-131 southbound.
- Unfortunately, that routes you right into the southbound lane closures.
There will be additional weekend ramp closures that MDOT will announce as they become necessary.
The S-Curve was rebuilt less than 15 years ago, so why bridge work now?
Most of the maintenance being done is on bridges that were not replaced
in the S-Curve project, says John Richard. “Those are all bridges that
feed into the S-Curve, and they’re approaching 60 years old,” he says.
The bridges that will be repaired carry southbound US-131 over Bridge
Street, over the Grand River, and over Market Avenue, the bridges that
carry the ramps from northbound US-131 to eastbound I-196, westbound
I-196 to southbound US-131, and the bridge that carries northbound
US-131 from Wealthy Street to Market Avenue.
The project begins Monday, July 7, and should be done by the end of August.
(June 26, 2014) — Expect backups in the evening hours Thursday when the westbound lanes of I-96 are closed at Alden Nash Avenue and all traffic is routed onto the exit and entrance ramps.
Bridge beams need to be placed for a new bridge being built over the expressway, so westbound I-96 will be closed from 9 p.m. to no later than 5 a.m. Friday.
will close Wednesday night at 1 a.m. and will remain closed until the
work is done, which should be sometime Friday afternoon, June 27, said
John Richard of MDOT.
The Kent County Road Commission is working
on resurfacing Kalamazoo Avenue at M-6, and it made sense to resurface
the ramps at the same time, said Richard.
The announcement of the closures was last-minute due to complications in bringing together the companies doing the work.
detours require miles of additional driving, given the great distances
between exits on M-6. To access locations west of the interchange, you
will have to get onto 68th Street south of the interchange at M-6 and
US-131. East of Kalamazoo Avenue, the first exit is at M-37 Broadmoor
(jUNE 24, 2014) — The lane closures on northbound I-196 in the Saugatuck area now shift to the south to allow for repairs to the bridge deck over the Kalamazoo River.
Expect the lane closures to continue through Thursday, June 26.
(June 23, 2014) — Nighttime lane closures are scheduled for a couple of weeks on US-31 in the Grand Haven/Spring Lake area.
Work is scheduled each night starting at 7 p.m. until July 3 on northbound and southbound US-31 between Jackson Street (south of the drawbridge) and Taft Street.
(June 23, 2014) — Short delays can be expected each day this week at the intersection of M-37 and 13 Mile. The traffic signal there is getting some work.
All work will be done 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. only.
(June 23, 2014) — The delays at the corner of Michigan Street and College Avenue east of downtown Grand Rapids aren’t over.
Last week, both westbound lanes of Michigan Street were closed west of College Avenue. This week, there is one lane open westboundon Michigan from College Avenue to Lafayette Avenue.
Delays getting through the Michigan/College intersection have been causing traffic to back up on the ramp from eastbound I-196 to College Avenue.
Maybe this will end soon. The Michigan Street lane closures are scheduled to end after Thursday, June 26.
(June 23, 2014) — Lane closures have been slowing drivers for several weeks on northbound US-131 from D Avenue in Kalamazoo County to the Plainwell exit.
The MDOT schedule has the road along that stretch of highway ending on Thursday, June 26.
No guarantees. All schedules are subject to change.
M-6 WEEKEND RAMP CLOSURE
(June 13, 2014) — Weekend work continues on the ramps in the I-96/M-6 interchange:
- Ramp from eastbound M-6 to eastbound I-96 closed

- End Sunday, June 15, 10 p.m.
(June 9, 2014) — Watch for long waits at the lights at FULLER AVE and MICHIGAN ST and on the ramps from I-196 to FULLER AVE.
FULLER AVE will be rebuilt between I-196 and MICHIGAN ST. That’s not a long distance, but the intersection of Fuller at Michigan is so close to the freeway that it doesn’t take much for traffic to get backed up, especially during commuting hours.
This project is scheduled to by done by Sunday, June 15.
(June 9, 2014) — Work on the traffic signal at M-21 W. MAIN ST and VALLEY VISTA AVE in Lowell is scheduled this week.
Expect lane closures daily 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday, June 12.

(June 4, 2014) — Wednesday night, the eastbound lanes of I-96 will be closed at M-50/ALDEN NASH AVE to allow placement of bridge beams for the new bridge (map above).
The closure is scheduled from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and all traffic will be routed onto the exit ramp and entrance ramp. Expect slow traffic entering a lane closure and through the detour.
Alden Nash Avenue over I-96 will remain open, since old bridge is still in place while the new bridge is being built next to it.
(June 4, 2014) — Northbound FULLER AVE will be closed north of BRADFORD ST and south of LEONARD ST until Monday afternoon (June 9)(map above) for water work.

Lane closures on ramp
(May 22, 2014) — It is now standard procedure for the Michigan Department of Transportation to suspend road construction on holiday weekends. It makes sense, since so many of us hit the road for beaches, parks, lake cottages, and such.
Any projects that require lane or ramp closures round the clock will not be changed, but workers will not be present, so the speed limits through construction zones will likely be 60 mph. But be sure to obey whatever speed limits that are posted.
(May 20, 2014) — Significant changes take place today in the US-131/Stadium Drive interchange.
Ramps that were previously closed will open, and ramps that were open will close.
- Northbound US-131 to westbound STADIUM DR
- Westbound STADIUM DR to SOUTHBOUND US-131
- May 20 – June 30
Traffic on Stadium Drive is being shifted to the south side of the street running on the eastbound lanes.
(May 19, 2014) — A number of new road construction sites pop up today, while a number of projects are scheduled to end by the end of the week.
Holland, 58TH ST BRIDGE closed over I-196 through June 12 (map above).
Wyoming, 28TH ST eastbound right land closed from MICHAEL AVE to CLYDE PARK AV through Wednesday, May 21 (Map above)
Grand Rapids, CHICAGO DR right lane closed at CLYDE PARK AVE through Friday, May 23.

(May 19, 2014) — The 3 MILE ROAD project has been extended through May 30.
Originally schedule to end around May 23, the latest work schedule form the Kent County Road Commission shows the finish date as May 30.
Local traffic is permitting, but you can’t drive all the way on 3 Mile between FULLER AVE and EAST BELTLINE AVE.
That changes this weekend for drivers on US-131 and I-96.

(May 14, 2014) — The latest posts from the Michigan Department of Transportation give us a clearer picture of how drivers will be affected by the project on I-196 south of Holland between US-31 and the Ottawa/Allegan county line.
Beginning today, expect lane closures on either side of the highway as crossover lanes are built and other work is done.
Expect all traffic to be on the westbound side with one lane in each direction and a concrete barrier separating traffic beginning May 27 and continuing until October.
There will be ramp restrictions at the M-40 interchange.
Hilarious video on texting while driving. Share it.
(May 12, 2014) — Here’s a rundown of the many new road construction projects gearing up today in addition to the big project on I-196 in Holland (below).
In Walker, lane closures will be in place on 4 MILE ROAD between BRISTOL AVE and a spot west of ALPINE AVE into September. (Map above)
In western Ottawa County, lane closures for resurfacing can be expected on southbound US-31 from CROSWELL ST to NEW HOLLAND ST through Friday May 16. (Map above).
In the same area, there will be lane closures on northbound US-31 from BAGLEY ST to CROSWELL ST for work on the Pigeon River Bridge through Friday, May 16. (Map above)
In eastern Kent County, nighttime and weekend lane closures began last week. They will continue in both directions through August 18. There will be times where you will see lane closures but no workers; that’s because concrete was poured and left to cure. (Map above)
Until May 23, there will be crews working and lane closures on southbound I-196 between 60th Street (before US-31 in Allegan County) and 140th Avenue (past the Saugatuck Rest Area). (Map above.)
Finally, lane closures in all directions at the intersection of LAKE MICHIGAN DRIVE and WILSON AVE (M-45 and M-11) can be expected nightly 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Wednesday night. (Map above)
HOLLAND, Mich. — Drivers along I-196 in Holland south of the Allegan County line have been seeing surveyors along the highway. This week, the heavy work begins.
Construction of crossover lanes begins right away, and after concrete barriers are installed, all traffic on I-196 will be in one lane in each direction on the westbound lanes between the Ottawa/Allegan county line and US-31. The eastbound pavement will be torn up and replaced.
In addition, work will be done on the ramps at the M-40 interchange. A new ramp will be built that will loop from southbound M-40 to eastbound I-196. Currently, southbound traffic must wait for northbound traffic to pass before getting onto eastbound I-196. This is intended to cut down on morning and afternoon congestion on M-40.
Follow @FOX17Traffic on Twitter and watch traffic reports on FOX 17 Morning News for updates.
(May 6, 2014) — There are probably more than one polling place that is affected by road construction, but this is the one I know about: In Grand Rapids Township, the polling location at the township fire station on 3 Mile Road west of Leffingwell Avenue.
The polling place is open, and 3 Mile is open to local traffic. I would not try getting their from Dean Lake Avenue. Try Leffingwell Avenue instead.
(May 5, 2014) — Work is progressing in the M-50/Alden Nash Avenue bridge project.
Supports are being raised to support the bridge that will be built next to the existing bridge.
I-96 at ALDEN NASH AVE/M-50 (Map above)
- Lane closures eastbound and westbound
- 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday and Tuesday nights, May 5 and 6
(May 5, 2014) — Construction will close a section of Cascade Road near the Ionia County line:
CASCADE RD between PRATT LAKE AVE and MONTCALM AVE
- Closed May 5 – Aug 1.
Detour: Use 36th Street or 52nd Street
(May 5, 2014) — Two bridge projects on US-31 will cause nighttime lane closures for “about two weeks,” says the Michigan Department of Transportation. That would be through May 16.
US-31 at TAFT RD (Top map above), Spring Lake Township
- Lane closures at night 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- All lanes open from Friday 6 a.m. to Sunday 7 p.m.

- Lane closures at night 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- All lanes open from Friday 6 a.m. to Sunday 7 p.m.
(May 2, 2014) — This was the scene on the I-196 Business Loop east of Maple Street in Zeeland this morning.
I first tweeted the crash at 9:29 a.m. as soon as I heard about it. Then FOX 17 Meteorologist and feature reporter Kelly Smith took this shot on the way back to the station from reporting on Holland’s Tulip Time during FOX 17 Morning News.
You can see a semi rig in the ditch after colliding with a white pickup, which you can see in the westbound lanes.
The westbound lanes were closed, while one lane remained open eastbound.
UPDATE MAY 2, 2014 — Notices on this project originally said the closures would begin May 1. Today, those notices say they begin May 2.
(May 1, 2014) — This one was a bit of surprise.
Two ramps in the US-131/STADIUM DR interchange will be closed through May 23.
Through today, lane closures were scheduled for utility work were in place on Stadium Drive between 11th Street and Rambling Road. Now, MDOT says these ramps need to be closed “to accommodate construction traffic and expedite ramp construction.”
- STADIUM DR eastbound to US-131 northbound
- US-131 southbound to STADIUM DR eastbound
To hop on board US-131, go north on DRAKE RD to W. MAIN ST. To get to eastbound Stadium Drive from southbound US-131, get off early at W. MAIN ST and use DRAKE RD southbound.
(May 1, 2014) — New for today is the closure of ADA DR between FOREST HILL AVE and SPAULDING AVE for construction. Usually this kind of closure allows local traffic but not “thru” traffic.
The closure remains until May 22.
Detour: Use CASCADE RD or FULTON ST instead.
(April 30, 2014) — Whoops.
Based on information provided by the Michigan Department of Transportation, I told you on the air today that nighttime lane closures would begin tonight on US-31 under TAFT RD in Spring Lake Township and on US-31 under SHETTLER RD in Norton Shores.
(The GIF above sure is annoying, isn’t it?)
MDOT issued a correction midday today that said both projects do not begin until Monday night, May 5.
(April 30, 2014) — Here’s a project that will affect a lot of drivers all year long.
In Wyoming, 44TH ST will have construction between CLYDE PARK AVE and DIVISION AVE. Count on driving through lane closures until November.
This project begins today, April 30.
(April 30, 2014) — In Kent County, PETTIS AVE is closed for construction between KNAPP ST and 5 MILE RD until May 14 (map above).
The detour is to use EGYPT VALLEY AVE or HONEY CREEK AVENUE instead.
(April 29, 2014) — Northwest of Nunica, work is underway on the APPLE DR bridge over I-96 (map above). Apple Drive is closed until the work is done on June 16. Expect occasional lane closures on I-96 under the bridge. Apple Drive detour: Use State Street, 130th Avenue, and M-104.
(April 29, 2014) — In Grand Rapids, BURTON ST will be closed between Eastern Avenue and Martin Avenue to the west of Eastern today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The city water department will be doing some work there. Detour: Use Division Avenue, Alger Street, and Eastern Avenue.
(April 28, 2014) — Beginning today in Allegan County, 142ND AVE is closed east of US-131 (Dorr exit) for replacement of a railroad crossing. Work will continue until about May 9. Use 144TH AVE or 129TH AVE. (Map above)
(April 28, 2014) — Big traffic jam on southbound US-131 was caused by this accident scene just south of Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids (pictured below). Traffic was backed up to I-96 at 8:15 a.m.
(April 28, 2014) — In Grand Rapids, 3 MILE RD will be closed between the city limits near the post office and the EAST BELTINE through May 23. Use KNAPP ST instead.
(April 28, 2014) — The first phase of a two-year project begins today in Kalamazoo.
Intermittent lane closures will pop up on eastbound and westbound Stadium Drive between Rambling Road and 11th Street through Thursday afternoon, May 1.
Later, reconstruction of Stadium Drive between Drake Road and Seneca Lane will disrupt traffic through September 12.
Beginning today in Grand Rapids, lane closures on LAKE MICHIGAN DR between US-131 and WINTER AVE, through May 23. Left turns prohibited from eastbound Pearl Street to Scribner Avenue and from westbound Pearl Street to Mt. Vernon Avenue, which, in both cases, keeps you from getting onto US-131. The city says signs will be posted directing you on how to get on US-131.
