ROCKFORD, Mich. — Michigan State Police reported Thursday the man killed in a wrong-way crash on I-96 early September 14 was Gregory Gene Johnson, 58, of Grass Lake, Mich., which is east of Jackson.

The head-on crash near the East Beltline was caused by a 43-year-old woman heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-96 at night.

Johnson died in the collision when his car caught fire. The woman was pulled from her SUV by a citizen just before any officers arrived.

Alcohol was believed to have been involved.

An investigation continues, and MSP anticipates forwarding the case to the Kent County prosecutor.
