HUDSONVILLE, Mich. — A 54-year-old Hudsonville man was killed when he was hit by a car while he was riding a bicycle on a dark road in Georgetown Township.

Rodney Vandyke was transported from the scene to Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids, where he died.

Traffic was routed around the scene on 36th Avenue between Baldwin Street and Port Sheldon Street while the incident was investigated.

According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, Jon Alferink, 40, was driving a car around 6:00 a.m. southbound on 36th Avenue when he hit Vandyke, who was also southbound. It was still dark, and the road was unlit. Alferink told deputies he never saw Vandyke before the crash.

Alferink was unhurt.
