5 escape from early-morning house fire; started with vehicle behind home

WHITE LAKE, Mich. — Five people escaped from a house fire without injury early Tuesday morning, and crews at the scene say it all started when flames from a vehicle fire spread to the home.

The fire happened before 4:00 a.m. on Franklin Street near Slocum in White Lake (Muskegon County).

The initial call came in as a vehicle fire.  When crews arrived, they saw the car on fire behind the home, and flames were spreading to the residence.  Five people were inside at the time, but they were able to escape without injury.

Firefighters got the flames under control in less than an hour, but there was still substantial damage done to the home, especially to the roof.

The American Red Cross is assisting with temporary arrangements for the residents.
