WAVERLY TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 17 year-old was arrested Saturday after police discovered what they are calling “burglary tools” inside his residence.

The teenager was discovered, along with a 13 year-old male that lived in the same residence, after a deputy with the Van Buren Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to an attempted Breaking and Entering at Glendale Grocery Store on M-43 Highway.  The store owner told the deputy that two young men were in his store earlier that evening, indicating the 17 year-old suspect as trying to steal alcohol from the store before being caught by a clerk.

The store owner had security camera footage that was given to the deputy, showing the 17 year-old and 13 year-old returning to the store around 2:15 early Saturday and attempting to break in to the store- it is unknown if they were successful in actually stealing anything.

The responding deputy was able to make contact with the suspects later in the day at a nearby residence.  Police recovered a knife and an assortment of tools inside.  After additional investigation was complete, the 17 year-old was arrested, while the 13 year-old was turned over to his parents, with a copy of the incident report being forwarded to the Van Buren County Juvenile Court as well as the Van Buren County Prosecutor’s Office.

The 17 year-old was arrested on the following charges:

  1. Attempted Breaking and Entering
  2. Possession of Burglary Tools
  3. Retail Fraud
