HOWARD CITY, Mich. — After Howard City firefighters put out a pickup fire, they found a motorcycle wedged underneath the pickup. It turned out the driver of the pickup had struck the motorcycle and kept driving.

The motorcycle rider was found at the site of the original collision and was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital. His condition was not released.

The driver of the pickup, described as a 43-year-old Stanwood man, was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving and was taken to the Montcalm County Jail.

According to a release from the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office, the series of events began around 12:15 a.m. April 7 when the pickup and motorcycle collided on M-82 at US-131.  Michigan State Police responded to the scene and found the rider, but no motorcycle and no pickup.

The pickup driver continued on and finally stopped on Church Road, where the pickup caught fire. The Howard City Fire Department responded, put out the fire, and found the motorcycle under the truck.

The pickup driver faces possible additional charges of leaving the scene of an accident.
