KALAMAZOO, Mich. --  Community members gathered in Kalamazoo Saturday to honor fallen Public Safety Officer, Eric Zapata.  He was shot and killed in the line of duty four years ago when coming to help a fellow officer.

The Eric Zapata Memorial Foundation put together a series of events to honor the fallen hero including a 5K starting at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.  There was also a memorial ceremony and the release of a beer brewed specially for Zapata.

The Boatyard Brewing Company created the E-Z-Ale just for Zapata, using his initials for the title.  They say the beer will be on tap all summer long and proceeds from it go towards the Eric Zapata Memorial Foundation.

The Eric Zapata Memorial Foundation is run on donations and volunteers.  The aim for the group is to provide more training for current officers and grant scholarships to students across Michigan.
