PORTAGE, Mich. — A dog missing for five days has been reunited with his owner shortly following news coverage on FOX 17 NEWS Tuesday night.

The 22-pound miniature American Eskimo named Benson ran into the woods during a walk after being spooked by an early celebration of fireworks. His owner, Kerrie Messenger, said Benson means the world to her because they named the dog after her son passed away nine years ago.

Reaching out to local shelters and posting flyers around Portage, Messenger was doing everything she could to locate Benson.

We are happy to announce that Benson was found by the wife of a Portage police officer shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday. The officer’s wife had been watching FOX 17 and noticed Benson from the newscast, returning the dog to Messenger with no injuries.

Messenger said she is forever grateful for Benson being found and plans to take him to a veterinarian for a checkup Thursday morning.
