LOS ANGELES — Former Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears quarterback Erik Kramer is in the hospital after an apparent suicide attempt.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies found Kramer inside a motel after he shot himself.

He is expected to survive.

Kramer’s ex-wife says he has been dealing with depression for the last few years.

She says she believes the head injuries he suffered from football led to that.

The Kramer’s also lost a son to a heroin overdose four years ago.

Kramer was  with the Lions from 1991 to 1993 and a Bear from 1994 to 1998, during his 10 year NFL career.
