GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — We are just a couple days away from the grand opening of a new Trader Joe’s in Kentwood. The grocery chain prides itself on its tropical environment and healthy food.

On Wednesday, FOX 17 got a preview inside of the store to see how they are touching up on all the final preparations. The fresh product is in place, cash registers are ready to go, and make no mistake on what city you’re in with the art on the walls.

“It’s been a lot of work, but it’s been very exciting,” said store captain Darla Sevok. “This store is feeling really comfortable here. It’s feeling very homey and we are excited to show it off to the community.”

The first Trader Joe’s opened up in 1967 in Pasadena, California. With more than 400 stores nationwide, the Kentwood location is next in line to open.

Since there isn’t another store nearby, crew members are falling in love with the brand for the first time, Sevok said. “The crew has had a chance to try product every single day that they’ve worked.”

“We love to try a lot of our products and encourage you to try them when you come and visit with us.”

About 80 percent of all the products are Trader Joe’s brand. That is something the company says not only keeps their prices down but also creates a more healthy product. “You can feel confident behind that label is that it contains no GMO’s, no artificial ingredients or preservatives, and no synthetic coloring,” said Sevok.

There’s a Grand Rapids skyline painting on the wall that isn’t just for show, since several west Michigan products also line the shelves, such as Founder’s beer.

“Our buying philosophy is really traveling the world to bring you some really fun exotic products right down to the basics, so that way you have an option to select what may be enticing your taste buds,” said Sevok.

With just a matter of hours left before the doors open for the first time, crew members are working around the clock to make all of the final special touches. “working hard to get as much product into the store, so therefore we have product for every customer that walks in and just building the excitement for the grand opening, because we can’t wait to open the doors,” said Sevok.

Trader Joe’s opens on Friday, September 25 at 8:00 a.m. and is located at 3684 28th Street SE in Kentwood.
