ALBION, Mich. – An Albion City Council member is being accused of criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

Maurice Barnes was arraigned in Calhoun County District Court Tuesday on a second-degree criminal sexual conduct charge of touching a child younger than 13.  The incident allegedly happened on Sept. 25 in Albion.

The City of Albion says that Barnes will continue serving on the city council while the case goes through the court and that Barnes, as well as anyone, is innocent until proven guilty.

The city also says that the investigation was conducted by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and not the Albion Department of Public Safety because of conflict of interest concerns.

Barnes represents the 1st Precinct and was elected in 2010 and again in 2014 for a 4-year-term.
