WASHINGTON (AP/WXMI) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley says the nation should resist the temptation to “follow the siren call of the angriest voices” during anxious times.

The daughter of Indian immigrants delivered the Republican response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.

Haley criticized the Democratic president’s record on health care and national security. But more telling was her veiled swipe at those in the GOP, such as presidential candidate Donald Trump, who have called for deporting the 11 million immigrants living here illegally and barring Muslims from entering the United States.

Haley calls herself a “proud daughter of Indian immigrants” and says individuals willing to work hard and follow the law shouldn’t feel unwelcome.

West Michigan’s U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga (R) expressed his disappointment in the address, accusing the president of worrying more about his legacy than the safety and security of the American people.

“Tonight, President Obama had a clear opportunity to lay out a comprehensive plan to restore American leadership across the globe and he chose not to. While President Obama spoke about the potential of America’s future, and our triumphs of the past, notably missing from the President’s address was the reality of the threats we face today.”

Huizenga represents Michigan’s second district, which consists of Lake, Oceana, Newaygo, Muskegon, and Ottawa Counties in their entirety, as well as portions of Allegan, Kent, and Mason Counties.
