ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — One of the five teens seriously injured in a Sunday morning crash has died.
Alyssa Eggerding, 16, of Alpine Township died Monday, according to the Kent County Sheriff's Department.
Eggerding was a passenger in a vehicle that crashed into a tree near Vinton Avenue NW and Nine Mile Road NW. The crash was reported at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday.
Police say the driver, 17-year-old Armando Mendoza, was traveling north on Vinton at a high speed when his car went off the road and hit a tree at the intersection's northeast corner.
Mendoza, Eggerding and three other teens—Kaitlin Keeler, 15, of Alpine Township; Olivia Lawrence, 17, of Sparta; and Alyssa Naughton, 16, of Walker—were seriously injured in the crash.
Eggerding, Keeler, Lawrence and Naughton were pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated before being transported to the hospital. Mendoza was airlifted to the hospital.
Police had originally said drug use likely factored into the crash. On Monday evening, the Kent County Sheriff's Department said they believed the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
