Wallethub.com ranks Holland, Michigan as the #1 small city in the United States to start a business. The only other Michigan locations in the top 100 are Southfield (32), Kentwood (51), Eastpointe (65) and Portage (82).
Wallethub says that small cities offer different advantages and disadvantages for startups. On the positive side, overhead costs are usually lower and there are often stronger relationships with customers. Businesses also have the potential to be the “big fish in a little pond.” But also small cities may not have the right employees a startup needs and may have a less diverse customer base.
