GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids West Catholic High School has a new head football coach.

The school announced Monday that they have hired Joseph Hyland as the new coach.  Hyland started at West Catholic in the fall of 2015 as a guidance counselor and teacher.  Previously, Hyland been at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville, South Carolina.

According to the school, Hyland played football at Millikin University under head coach Chuck Martin, who went on to be the head coach of the Grand Valley State Lakers, then the Offensive Coordinator of Notre Dame, and is now the head coach at Miami of Ohio.  Martin recommended Hyland for the West Catholic position.

Hyland also played professional football in Europe for the Hamburg Blue Devils, according to the school.

Hyland also spent time as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University and was a finalist for South Carolina’s Coach of the Year Award.

Hyland said in a press release, “I am excited to be part of the long tradition of excellence that is West Catholic football.  I would like to thank Coach Rohn and all the past coaches and players that have built the foundation on which I stand today.  I would also like to thank all the assistant coaches.  I’m excited to learn from them and work together to train these young men to be winners not only in football but in life.”

Dan Rohn resigned as head coach from West Catholic in April citing changes in his career and the coaching environment at West Catholic. Rohn led West Catholic to 4 state titles including each of the last 3 seasons.  He was 99-19 in 9 years as the schools head coach.
