Body found in boat fire identified as Grand Rapids firefighter

Posted

OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. – Forensics investigators have officially determined that the body found on burned boat in Spring Lake over the weekend was a Grand Rapids firefighter David Knisley.

The final determination was announced Tuesday afternoon.  Knisley was a lieutenant with the Grand Rapids Fire Department and had also been involved in the 28th Street Metro Cruise with WKTV in Wyoming and Kentwood.

Knisley’s boat was found on fire early Sunday morning at a mooring in Spring Lake and his body was found after the boat had sunk.  Because of the fire, investigators could not easily identify the body as Knisley’s.

The Chief Medical Examiner of Ottawa County, Dr. David A. Start, determined that Knisley died from smoke inhalation.  The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
