17-year-old drowns after jumping off pier in Berrien County

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. — A 17-year-old junior at Benton Harbor High School is dead after deputies say he drowned in Lake Michigan on Saturday evening.

Deputies say Travonne Shannon was jumping off the South Pier at Silver Beach with a relative but after one of the jumps, he didn’t surface.

Multiple departments responded to the scene just before 7:30 p.m. to search for the teen. About 2 hours after the call, divers from the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office found the his body in 14 feet of water.

Shannon was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
