PORTAGE, Mich. — Two vehicles that overturned in separate accidents produced injuries in the city Saturday night and early Sunday morning, according to the Portage Department of Public Safety.

The first occurred at 7:56 p.m. Saturday in the 500 block of West Centre Street. Upon arriving at the scene, officers determined that an 86-year-old Portage woman had been backing out of a private driveway onto West Centre in a 2012 Kia Sportage when she backed into the path of a 2002 BMW SUV that was westbound on West Centre.

The SUV driver, a 56-year-old Paw Paw woman, attempted to avoid the collision, swerved and her vehicle was hit by the Sportage. Meanwhile, the BMW driver lost control, the SUV spun, struck the north curb, left the roadway and rolled over onto its top.

The BMW driver sustained minor injuries and was transported by Pride Care ambulance to Borgess Hospital. The lone passenger in the SUV, a 54-year-old Paw Paw man, was not injured.

The Sportage driver was not injured and was cited for causing the accident.

Westbound Centre Street was partially blocked for a short period of time.

The second incident happened at 2:47 a.m. Sunday on eastbound Interstate 94 just east of Oakland Drive. upon arriving at the scene, officers found that a 1986 Chevrolet Camaro had rolled over and entrapped the driver.

The vehicle had been eastbound on I-94 when it left the right shoulder of the roadway and rolled over up the embankment before striking the concrete barrier.

The driver, a 23-year-old Battle Creek man, was trapped inside, was extricated and was transported by ambulance to Borgess Hospital with minor injuries.

He was the vehicle’s only occupant.
