GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.– Just days after community backlash led to Woodland Mall ending the lease of a controversial designer puppy store, we’re learning more about the health of those puppies sold.

The BISSELL Pet Foundation posted a statement on its Facebook page that explains that they were made aware that the ‘The Barking Boutique’ was closing and that any unsold puppies would be shipped out-of-state.

The Foundation arranged an undercover purchase of six puppies and later discovered all six were underweight and had health issues, ranging from upper respiratory infections to diarrhea.

Those puppies are currently in foster homes until they are ready for adoption. They’ll be available through a local rescue organization once they have veterinary clearance.

The Foundation went on to write, “BPF is proud of the Grand Rapids community for taking a stand. The community will not sit by to allow the perpetuation of a bad business practice that allows people to profit while pets suffer.”

The Foundation set up an online fundraiser to help get care for the puppies.
