CLIMAX, Mich. -- Despite last night's rain, it's been a hot and dry summer in Michigan. That has some farmers worried about the impact on crops, but one Kalamazoo County farm is using technology to beat Mother Nature.

Avalon Farm's Bridgette Leach says her tomato plants are happy plants, and that's because they don't rely on the will of the weather for nutrients.

While many farmers can only hope for rain, hydroponic farmers like Bridgette, can control everything from soil type to water. "We can give them the optimum amount of water, not dependent on rainfall."

The farm is on well water, so Leach isn't sweating it this summer.

Leach also says it doesn't matter if you're buying traditionally grown tomatoes or hydroponic ones, they taste the same. But there is something you should never do - don't put a tomato in the refrigerator!

Bridgette Leach's Favorite Tomato Recipe:

  • Fresh Mozzarella
  • Fresh Basil
  • Fresh Sliced Tomato
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Dash of Kosher Salt
