KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Two people were hospitalized after police said they crashed into a tree and landing on top of an empty vehicle.

It happened on Saturday around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Cadillac and Douglas in Kalamazoo. A Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer on scene said the vehicle hit the tree with enough force that the vehicle turned 90 degrees in the air and landed on top of another vehicle, according to a press release from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

The driver, a 26 year-old man, was driving on a license, police say, was suspended indefinitely. The driver told authorities he knew the brakes were not working properly. The vehicle traveled down Summit Park, the driver lost control after accelerating and was unable to stop at the stop sign.

The passenger was able to get out of the vehicle without assistance, but the driver had to be extracted before he was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The passenger suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety encourages all drivers to have routine inspections and maintenance on their vehicles.
