GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Authorities were forced to evacuate a building near the Roosevelt Park neighborhood Sunday afternoon while crews worked to address a gas leak.

The smell of gas was reported around 4:20 p.m. Sunday at Wood Mender’s, located at 446 Grandville Ave. SW in downtown Grand Rapids.

Authorities on scene tell FOX 17 the building was evacuated and the source of the leak has been located. The gas was likely leaking inside the building for more than a day after a furnace appeared to have fallen from a ceiling, according to crews on scene.

By Sunday evening, the gas had been shut off to the building and crews were monitoring the situation while working to ventilate the structure.
