Just two weeks ago, many West Michiganders were lamenting that a lack of rainfall was starting to become more noticeable and asking for more rain to fall.
Ask and you shall receive, in this case, as localized amounts between two and four inches fell within a span of about a week. While this hasn’t completely relieved every drought stricken area in West Michigan, it has certainly wiped out much of it. From the above chart provided by the U.S. Drought Monitor, you’ll notice a lot of areas aren’t in the “abnormally dry” area anymore, especially in comparison to a couple of weeks ago.
In fact, Grand River levels spiked quite a bit after those heavy rains that 3rd weekend in July. It’s noticeably higher in many locations as well.
For many of the locations that are still drought stricken, there may be more relief on the way! The Climate Prediction Center issued an above average probability that we’ll receive greater than normal precipitation during the middle portion of August.
