EATON COUNTY, Mich. — The Eaton County Sheriff’s Department now has the means to make it easier to identify a person with a record with new mobile fingerprint scanners.

Eaton County is one of the first local police agencies in Michigan to have the new technology. The scanners are linked to the in-car computers in police cruisers.

The mobile scanner transmits the scanned fingerprint to the Michigan Automated Fingerprint Identification System and to the F.B.I. national fingerprint database as well. In mere minutes, deputies will know if a person has a record that identifies them.

The scanners can also be used to identify people who are unable to provide identification to due to physical or mental disablement, or identify those who are deceased and identification is needed to assist in investigations.

On the very first day the devices were implemented, Eaton County Sheriff’s Deputies were able to identify a person in Delta Township with two Eaton County arrest warrants and an additional out-of-state warrant.
