DETROIT (AP) — Police say a 10-month-old girl has died after her mother accidentally ran her over with an SUV in the driveway of a Detroit home.
Police responded Thursday night and say a preliminary investigation found that the child was in the backyard with other children and at least one adult when she got out of the yard. The mother was apparently moving the SUV in order to wash it when she hit the child, who recently learned to walk.
Police say the child was pronounced dead at a hospital. Officer Nicole Kirkwood tells the Detroit Free Press it’s “a horrible, tragic accident.”
Mandy Jackson tells The Detroit News her granddaughter was run over. She says the child’s mother is distraught and the accident is “breaking everybody’s heart.”
An investigation is ongoing.
