With Fall in full swing and winter on the way, flu season is not far behind. In order to fight the flu, doctors at Spectrum Health want to make sure everyone gets their flu shots.

The flu vaccine is the first and best way to prevent influenza, and can prevent doctor's visits and hospitalizations.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends everyone six months and older should have their flu shot by the end of October.

The flu shot is also available as a nasal spray, however the CDC doesn't recommend the nasal spray for the 2016-17 flu season. Research by the CDC shows that for the past three years, the nasal spray did not perform nearly as well as the traditional shots.

Flu vaccines are available at many locations such as the doctor's office, clinics, health departments, pharmacies, and college health centers. Many employers and schools offer vaccination clinics too.
