BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Tthe youngest survivor of the February shooting rampage in Kalamazoo marked a major milestone Sunday. Abigail Kopf, who shot in the head, celebrated her 15th birthday. The teen was feared dead, but has been beating the odds ever since.

“She went through such a tragedy and has overcome so much,” a post read on the Abbie Kopf Recovery Facebook page. “Her spirit her heart her smile shines so bright . We are so proud of you.”

In June, one of the incisions from Abbie’s surgery became infected. She was forced to undergo surgery to remove a plate that was inserted into her head to get rid of the infection.  She had the plate implanted in May to replace part of her skull that was severely damaged by a gunshot wound.

In the meantime, she is attending school three times a week, and her family says she is looking forward to Halloween.

Kopf and Tiana Carruthers were the only two survivors of the February 20 shooting that left six people dead at three scenes in the Kalamazoo area.
