GRAND RAPIDS - Officer Michael Harris of the Grand Rapids Police Department is being honored by the Boys and Girls Club after making a significant contribution to help local youth with the financial hurdles of going to college.

Officer Harris was recently 1 of 12 people in the United States to be awarded the 2016 Maytag Dependable Leader Award.  As part of the honor, Officer Harris and the Boys & Girls Club of Grand Rapids received a $20,000 grant to be used to provide multiple members of the club with college scholarships.

The Boys & Girls Club of Grand Rapids had the following words to say about Officer Harris:

Officer Harris has been a full-time police officer for your Seidman Boys & Girls Club for 15 years. Going well beyond his civic duty, Officer Harris serves as a mentor, role model and friends for handfuls of members of our organization. Many of these kids only have a reliable support figure in the home, so Officer Harris offers them the steady guidance they need to recognize their full potential and achieve great futures. Furthermore, Officer Harris was a Club kids himself 30 years ago. He is passionate about creating safe havens for kids in the community and understand most effectively how the Boys & Girls Clubs foster such environments.
