GRANT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Firefighter Michael Buitendorp was on his way with a partner answering a call when he lost consciousness. He died later at the hospital.
Buitendorp served with the Grant Township Fire Department in Oceana County.
The department says he and his partner were answering a call on a camper fire on S. Forest Glen Drive east of Rothbury in Otto Township when he lost consciousness. He was driving a water tender truck at the time, but his partner was able to safely stop the truck, call for help, and tend to Buitendorp.
After township fire units, Grant Rescue, and Life EMS responded, Buitendorp was taken to Mercy Health Lakeshore Hospital, where attempts to revive him failed.
He is survived by his wife Anna and four children.
Service arrangements are pending.
