COOPERSVILLE, Mich. — The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a body found in the Grand River on Saturday afternoon. No identification has been confirmed at this time.

The location is at the end of 60th Avenue, near where 18-year-old Hunter Klompstra disappeared. The teenager was last seen at a New Year’s Eve party near there.

A search for Klompstra was scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday in that area and organizers had asked for kayaks and small boats to assist with this search, since snow has now cleared from the area and the water level has dropped since earlier searches were conducted.

Jason Cooke took his kayak out to the water to help to assist with the search.

“I was thinking like if I had a loved one out there, I’d want everyone out there to help,” Cooke said.

Cooke said the unidentified body was found near an island toward the middle of the river.

“The first spot that I initially started looking in, ended up being where they found them, but I didn’t see,” Cooke said.

The sheriff’s office was called to the 6100 block of Leonard Road shortly before noon for a suspicious sighting in the water. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies confirmed that it was a body.

An autopsy will be conducted, and Coopersville Polkton Fire Rescue assisted at the scene.
