GIRARD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A semi-truck driver had to be freed from his truck Monday morning after a medical issue caused him to go off the road into a wooded area.

The crash happened around 7:57 a.m. on Marshall Road north of Bidwell Road in Girard Township, about six miles north of Coldwater. Investigators say the driver had a medical event that caused him to black out, which sent the semi off the road, through a small wooded area and onto a large rock pile.

When deputies arrived, the semi was smoking, and the driver was trapped by the trees. First responders were able to get him out and treat him for minor injuries.
