SOUTH HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Firefighters in South Haven Township had a unique challenge to deal with Monday morning as a semi hauling hay caught fire on the highway.

The truck was heading north on I-196 near the Phoenix Road exit when the driver noticed smoke in his rear-view mirrors. He pulled onto the shoulder and tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher along with another trucker, but ultimately had to call 911.

Fire crews arrived around 10 a.m. and were able to contain the fire to the front third of the load and prevent damage from the truck’s cab and trailer. It took about two hours to off-load the burning hay.

The trucker was able to finish his trip, even though he lost a share of his load.
